Over the last quarter-century 42nd Street Moon has established itself both locally and nationally as one of the few companies committed to preserving the glorious and rich history of musical theater through the production of shows that are a little off the beaten path—lesser-known shows by the genre’s greatest composers, well-known shows that haven’t had professional productions in the bay area recently, and the occasional world or regional premiere!
As we look ahead to the next 25 years, we are excited to continue this wonderful legacy. Whether it’s the regional professional premiere of Sondheim’s (almost) Broadway debut, the return of a hilarious English musical from the 1930s, the first Broadway musical written entirely by women, or a rollicking evening of song, dance, and stride piano, our mainstage season promises to delight and move you. Additionally, our “back to our roots” series celebrates our first 25 years with staged readings of three of our favorite past hits—featuring the incredible music of Irving Berlin, Rodgers and Hart, and the Gershwin brothers. We are also excited to be putting a 23-piece orchestra onstage for our fundraiser concert of Kismet in June 2017.

The rollicking, joyous, and infectious music of Fats Waller will have you singing and dancing in the aisles during our season opener! Equal parts pianist, singer, songwriter and comedian, Fats Waller was one of the seminal figures of 20th century jazz and Tin Pan Alley, with such standards as “Honeysuckle Rose,” “Keepin’ Out of Mischief Now,” and “I’ve Got a Feeling I’m Falling” to his name. Five top-notch performers will give you an evening of non-stop, high-energy singing and dancing while celebrating one of America’s greatest artists!

Based on the classic English children’s novel, a beautiful and haunting story comes to life in this 1991 musical, featuring a Tony-winning score and book by an all-female creative team. In the late 19th century, 11-year-old Mary Lennox is orphaned in India and comes to Yorkshire to live with her reclusive uncle and invalid cousin. There she discovers a mysterious and seemingly enchanted garden, and all three come to know forgiveness, renewal and hope. The Secret Garden is a wonderful show for the whole family to enjoy at the holiday season!

In 1955, a new musical featuring an up-and-coming composer/lyricist’s Broadway debut was set to open when the lead producer suddenly died and the show was scrapped. That show was Saturday Night, and the composer/lyricist—Stephen Sondheim—has become one of the most important figures in musical theatre history. The show was finally produced in 1997, and we are pleased to be presenting its Bay Area professional premiere. A lighthearted story of lovers and friends in 1929 Brooklyn, Saturday Night’s score features some lovely songs and many flashes of the genius that Mr. Sondheim was soon to become.

At once both sidesplittingly funny and charmingly romantic, Me and My Girl was a major hit on the West End in 1937, but was largely unknown in the United States until a Broadway production in 1986, where it also became a major success. This fish-out-of-water comedy is the story of a roustabout Cockney lad who learns he’s actually an Earl and must try to adjust to his new upper-class life. Several of the songs from the show became major hits of the day, including “Leaning On a Lamppost,” “The Lambeth Walk” and the title song.

When 42nd Street Moon started out 25 years ago, productions were very simple – minimal sets and costumes, scripts in hand. Now that we’ve grown to present the fully realized shows you see today, we also want to celebrate our anniversary by going “back to our roots” – bringing three of our favorite shows back the way we used to do them! Discussion Sundays
Get all your burning questions answered about the show you’ve just seen during our fun and informative post-performance discussions with the audience, cast, and crew. Hosted by Executive Directors Daren A.C. Carollo and Daniel Thomas, who will share the history of the original production as well as our current incarnation! Learn more about the composers, lyricists, and book writers, as well as your favorite Moonie cast members. Discussion Sundays happen on the first and second Sunday of each show in our regular season offerings.

Family & Student Matinees
The best deal in town for kids, parents, and students of all ages. Young people under 18 and college students with a valid student ID can see the show for just $10! Younger students receive a family activity guide, get to participate in an intermission contest (with prizes!), and can join in on a post-show discussion and visit with the actors that includes autographs and pictures. This is a great way to introduce the next generation to the heritage of American musical theatre. This is also a great idea for a kid’s birthday party. Please contact Education Director Dyan McBride for further details or if you have a large group wishing to attend.
42nd Street Moon created the Family Matinee to make musical theatre affordable and accessible for young people along with their parents and to provide families the opportunity to experience classic Broadway. Relevant, fun activities and fascinating discussion guides enable families to rediscover how theatre has served an important function in our nation’s cultural landscape and been a way for families to come together. We have expanded the matinee to be a Family and Student Matinee, so that college-aged students can also take advantage of the generous discount.
